I am quite nervous by the time I arrive at the clinic. I’ve had Ultrasounds before so I’m not too worried about the procedure itself but I just want it all to be over with so I can cross it off my list and concentrate on the big move which is just over a week away. There is still so much to organise and so much packing to do.
I am led into a large consultation room where I change into a front opening gown and wait as instructed. The room is nice and warm even though I am the first one in this morning. The Ultrasound is painless but despite the warmth of the room, the gel is cold and I shudder involuntarily when it’s first applied. The female technician is quite friendly and points out the big screen on the wall above me where I can see what is happening inside me. On screen my left breast area looks a bit like a cross between a lunar landscape and a cloudy black and white weather pattern. As she slides the wand over my skin even I can see the visible lump among the varying shades of grey on the screen. No, wait, is that 2 lumps? I ask the technician. Yes, she says as she marks their lengths and widths. She won’t tell me what she thinks they are, but when she says goodbye and wishes me all the best I get a sinking feeling in my chest.
