I start the day with what will be my regular Wednesday morning blood tests. The phlebotomist who takes my blood misses the vein in my left arm so has a go at the right. Success. My arms are bruised from all the testing and I think that will continue as chemo is said to make the veins shrink. I may as well get used to it. At least I have the Portacath for the chemo IV drugs.

C comes over to help Mum put some pictures up on the walls and we hang out. It’s nice and relaxed and almost pre-cancer-like.

A courier arrives and delivers a huge bouquet of flowers. They are from my Personal Banking Training Team who I trained with in January. Wow! I can’t believe they did this. I do not actually work with any of them and have only ever met them virtually but we do keep in touch via chat and try to support each other. An, based in Christchurch, has searched for me on Facebook, found Susannah by association, contacted her and asked for our address. Nice piece of sleuthing! I am quite overwhelmed by their gesture of support. I realise how much extended support matters.

I get a call from Southern Cross – my Cancer Assist claim has been approved. Phew! This will definitely take the pressure off financially while we make our way through this year of uncertainty.

On the flip side, C finds out via email that she is being made redundant after 25 years at her company. She’ll get a great redundancy package but that’s not really the point is it.

Life can change in seconds.
